The maker of Slim-Fast has issued a nationwide recall of all its products in cans because the drinks may be tainted with a potentially harmful organism.

Unilever United States, Inc. said the ready-to-drink canned shakes could be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism that may cause diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.

The recall includes all Slim-Fast ready-to-drink products in cans, regardless of flavor, Best-By date, lot code, or UPC number. The company sold the drinks in individual 11 ounce cans and in paper cartons that contained four, six, or 12 cans.

No other Slim-Fast productsm, including powdered shakes, snack bars, or meal bars, are included in the recall.

Unilever said it took this action "out of an abundance of caution" after discovering the contamination during quality control testing.

"The company is in the process of identifying and correcting the production issue, and will resume production and shipment of the product when the issue has been addressed and corrected," according to a statement on the company's Web site.

Consumers who have any of the recalled products should immediately discard them, the company said.
